For the patterning on my surrounding canvases I went back to one of my earlier experiments. This was dropping coloured card onto a background and removing excess pieces to create a shape. For these I repeated this process, but instead of taking the excess pieces away I left them in. This was so I could cut the shape out of foamboard to lay on top of the canvas so that people could easily see my chosen shape, but also see what surrounded it.
