In - Session Task

This was a task in session for a group of 4 of us to come up with something creative. We all decided that what we all enjoyed doing the most was randomly doodling, so we came up with the first of our 'doodlings' (shown left) where we each had a section of the paper and drew whatever we felt like at the time. This was good for me as it was something fun and completely random not knowing what the outcome would be. It was a good feeling to be free to draw whatever I wanted and to 'go with the flow'.

Our second creation was a bit more limited (shown right) for this we decided upon having a time constraint in which to draw upon what the person to our left drew, to carry it on. I felt a bit dubious about this at first as most of my drawings are controlled and I don't allow much room for error when i'm drawing by myself. It felt free up until the point I realised that I had a time limit - so I was anticipating that rather than just carrying on, which of course led to having no ideas. 

I definitely preferred the first of our creations - not just because I found the second one much more difficult to get used to, but because we all chatted and had a look at what the others were doing and laughed about it, whereas the second, we were concentrating in silence trying to get what we wanted to do done.

Task 2

Michel Foucault was an evolutionary thinker who’s thoughts can be seen to trace a large section of late 20^th Century philosophy. As such, he represents an approximation or map for the uncharted waters of consensual opinion as to the perception, understanding of, and reaction to, the potential of a causal reality with which we interact. The majority of his internal conflict expressed itself as to the disputed existence of an underpinning truth, and humanities pyrrhic desire to espouse revolutionary ideals and concepts only to tear them down – as if undeserving of a glimpse of godhood.

It is this desperate search for an underlying truth, almost the wail of an infant torn from the comfort of a mother’s breast, which describes the developments in thought during his life. As one system was created to deal with inadequacies of the current modus, its own weaknesses become apparent – engendering a new generation of revolutionaries with a fire and zeal. Ironically, the tools used to fatally wound a system of thought are those that it created itself, and these are then bastardised into creating the descriptions of the successor. The genealogy of thought is therefore formed by the accretion of a system of confining and defining tools, rules and assumptions – which instead of freeing the wings of thought serve only to imprison them in a cage of their own willing collusion.

Against this background the endemic of those rejecting such stratified and constraining thoughts can be seen not as a rejection of the cerebration of philosophy, but as it’s purist form of expression. Rather than demanding the reader accept, conform and internalise certain methods of thought in order to comprehend the rarefied purity of the debate, experimental practice creates a representation which invites the viewer to understand in their own way – to develop their own rules. By using philosophy as a formative starting point from which to unleash a barrage of stimulation to be perceived independently they perfectly represent post-modernist thinking that there is not necessarily an underlying cosmic truth, but that as long as we all agree that there is a consensus of opinion and thought, there may as well be. Lacking the need for formal education and debate on angels dancing on the head of a pin, these are the new opiates for the masses – accessible at some level by all.

Therefore, in summary – something completely different:

Microscopic Photography - Petal

This was an area that I had never really thought about before, building on my macro photography I had a chance to go in even closer to produce some microscopic images. I was really happy with my result - again the attention to detail was important here, and also pattern was introduced on a different level to my macro photograph. Definitely something that I would try again.

Macro Photography

Macro photography is my main area of interest within photography - I love experimenting with different lenses to create some really nice photographs or effects. My aim of this photograph was attention to detail, no matter how large or small. This was part of a plant which I found particularly interesting because of how it curled and how detailed it was. Also, the flecks of red give it a sense of realization which the viewer can relate to.

Light Painting

'Light painting' is something that I have experimented with in the past and would like to re-visit. This technique is very effective and captivating. Creating pattern with photography is an interesting area of photography so I would like to explore this more.

Creating a typeface from facial expressions.

Typography is one of my favorite fields within Graphic Design. It fascinates me as there is always something you can do with type to make it different and more exciting.

This video I saw a while ago now, but still feel it's relevant to my research of what's out there and also what can be achieved.

Blu - Muto

This interests me even though i'm not an animation student - I really like the way it's put together and how it keeps you captivated. Also, watching peoples expressions while they watch is quite interesting because people react in different ways - which could lead to a whole different type of design altogether.
